Horton’s costume was my favorite to make and design. It is constructed from cotton velveteen and the actor is wearing some padding. The folds were created by cutting the pattern (Simplicity 9499-pajamas) every 2-3 inches and adding 2-3 inches for the pleats. I even added pleats along the arm scythes (since they were straight).  The pleats were supported between the seams by elastic allowing the folds to move with Horton, but keep their shape. Originally, I supported the folds with cord, but the naughty Wickersham brothers managed to snap all the cords at dress rehearsal.

The head piece was constructed from the same cotton velveteen over a hat form. I sewed the tube for the trunk and used a wire to shape it. The ears were supported by very stiff interfacing. The purple contrast is mottled lavender fleece.
